I attach the draft of the Strategic Plan 2014. (Strategic Plan Rogaining 2014 draft for discussion 140616.docx)
Please read this. Send any comments to us before the WRC meeting in August. The Plan will be discussed at the meeting. We plan to vote on the Plan in September.
There are two issues that should possibly be included in the Strategic Plan.
1. At present, the IRF Rules of rogaining cover only foot rogaines. We need to decide whether the IRF has a role in variations on rogaining, including mountain bike rogaines, cyclogaines, metrogaines and ski rogaines. We have occasionally included these events in the calendar at rogaining.com. Should the IRF recognise, coordinate, promote and regulate any or all of these events.
2. Rogaining is defined as the sport of long-distance cross-country navigation. We may need to be more precise about what 'long' means. How short can a rogaine be? In the English-language Wikipedia article on rogaining there is a sentence: "Championship rogaines are 24 hours long, however rogaines can be as short as 2 hours." We have had a case where a club has organised a 30 minute event and called it rogaining sprint. In fact, Estonian local rogaining rules have set a limit that to be called a rogaine, the event shall be at least of 3 hours duration. I note that the Taranaki secondary school rogaining championships in NZ are also a 3 hour rogaine. Traditionally, rogaines have been defined as being of 3 hour duration or longer.
